31Oct Man Eats Living Yellow Mealworm For Four Years To Cure Gastric
Eating worms or insects may not be an unusual thing in some part of the world, but it is definitely weird and scary in the Chinese society. 49-year-old Cheng Ping Gui from Xipu, Xi County was putting a wiggling yellow mealworm into his mouth when reporter went to visit him. He has been eating at least 10 yellow mealworms daily for four years.
Every time Cheng invited his friends to have meal at home, he will prepare two yellow mealworm dishes. One is deep fried yellow mealworm, whereas the other is raw and living one. Although Cheng ate the living mealworm happily, his guests can only try the deep fried one by their limit.
Cheng first contact with the yellow mealworm was 12 years ago. It was his brother-in-law who bred the yellow mealworm, and each mealworm can be sold from 5 cent to 10 cents. Cheng changed his career path by seeing how profitability yellow mealworm business is even though his family and friends strongly disagreed with his decision. Four years ago, he went to Xin Dou county to sell yellow mealworm, and he saw a foreigner swallowed a living yellow mealworm into his stomach. He thought that he had bad health, so he imitated the foreigner eating the yellow mealworm raw. After that he was in love with the mealworm and his gastric hemorrhage was cured.
Hua Xi Insect Museum curator, Zhao Li, claimed that yellow mealworm has high level of protein and it is not toxic or poisonous. The yellow mealworm is widely used as feed, and it is edible. “As long as the yellow mealworm is clean, eating raw at small amount should not cause any harm,” Zhao said. However there is no study case or research show that yellow mealworm can cure gastric hemorrhage.
