Two artists came from Szechuan earthquake-infected area stunned the arts community with their realistic oil paintings at the first arts festival held at Huang Jue Ping. The oil paintings album is titled “Oriental Goddess and Mountain Ghost Series” which features naked lady at fairy-like scenes with different animals. The lady in the paintings is the daughter of the painter.

The painter of “Oriental Goddess” is Li Zhuangping, 61, and his daughter Li Qin is 23 years old. His work was inspired by Qu Yuan’s “Mountain Ghost” and Guo Moruo’s “Mountain Wu’s Goddess”. He then saw that his daughter matched the features of the goddess in the tales, so he asked her daughter if she would like to become his nude model. Li Qin agreed and both of them worked on the paintings for several years and finally created the amazing works. Li Zhuangping said that he wished to paint the hamorny between human and nature, human and animals, and also human and human.

“Mountain Wu’s Goddess” a.k.a. “Wushan’s Goddess” is a goddess in ancient Chinese mythology. Her real name was Yao Ji. There are different sayings about her origins, some said she was the daughter of the Mountain Wu, some said she was Emperor of Heaven’s daughter, and some said she was the daughter of Emperor Yan. She was never married when she was alive. When she passed away, she was buried in Mountain Wu, and later became Goddess. She used to seduce several emperors in dreams, and this led to the using of “Wushan (mountain Wu) Goddess” to praise a pretty lady.

Recently a post titled “Student from Shenzhen University Ultimate DIY Dormitory Modification” was spreading like wild fire on Chinese forums, and it gained a lot of hits and discussion. A guy modified his 2 m x 0.9 m dormitory bed into a creative private space with three boards and a curtain.

The dormitory bed consisted of lights, computer, and air circulation facilities. The monitor could be easily adjusted and position. There was also a writing desk which can be put away at anytime. The keyboard, mouse and headphone were hanged on the wall. By spinning a knob, all these things can be used. The small space also has three board to put daily supplies. The most notable thing was the calligraphy hanged on the bedside, which wrote “Study House” on it.

The owner of this DIY dormitory bed was Shenzhen University’s Wang Xu. Wang Xu was 20-year-old young man from Shenzhen. Currently he was sophomore student of Shenzhen University’s Faculty of Law. Wang Xu said that he had never stay with other people before. When he just moved into the dorm, he already had the thought of having a private space. However he had removed the electronics under the pressure of the school as the school did not want other students to imitate.

Wang Xu came up with the ideas bit by bit, and he bought all the materials before the summer vacation. During the October holiday, he assembled all the materials at home and then moved back to the dorm. The cost for the whole modification only spent him 2000 RMB. After living at the newly designed space for 20 days, he showed the photo of his DIY dorm on the school forum. This attracted 100 more people visited his room. He became a popular guy in the university. He was even invited to talk about the design on the school radio, and also invited by the school of architecture to discuss about the design with the graduates.

At the Third China Beijing Internaional Art Biennial , a half naked Cixi sculpture with its private part covered with a white towel aroused many audiences’ attention. Li Xiangqun, author of the sculpture, said that there was no “fig leaf” initially. It was covered by the organizer as some audiences report to the authorities.

The title for this half nude scuplture was “cumulus cloud drifting snow”. The sculpture was an image of a woman in Qing Dynasty palace, sitting on a chair way exposing breasts and thighs. The private part was covered with a white square towel and it was uncoordinated with the original material. Many audiences noted this in the China Art Gallery Exhibition Hall.

The staff recalled when the sculpture was not covered with hand towel when the exhibition started. It was added soon after the display.

Li, the sculptor, said the creation of sculpture used the Empress Dowager Cixi as a prototype. “Half bare” creation was only to express his understanding of history.

“When it was sent for approval, the relevant department had not raised any objection.” Li said on 8th July afternoon, the opening of the exhibition, Chinese Artists’ Association (organizer) said there were complaints from audiences and told him that his work needed to be ‘censored’. Li had no choice but covered Cixi private part.

The saying of “complaints from audiences” was not confirmed by Chinese Artists’ Association as there was no one in the office answering the calls.
