Bubble tea is a beverage invented in Taiwan in 1980s. Bubble tea is a sweetly flavored tea which contains fruit, fruit syrup and / or milk. The tea also usually contains pearl tapioca (or known as boba) which gives the beverage the name of “pearl milk tea”.

Creative and innovative Taiwanese now use the beverage as soup base of hot pot at a restaurant in Taipei. The restaurant, which has a strong buddhist ambience, uses bubble tea to cook the hot pot ingredients together. The soup is cooked with tea leaves, fresh milk and home made sauce for 12 hours before serving. The soup is milky in colour. The “pearls” in this hot pot are not sweetly flavoured, but salty and soft. It tastes just like salty soy milk cooked with the “pearls”.

Wang from Changchun discovered a ring-shaped item when he ate ice cream on November 4, 2010. His first thought of the item was condom.

Mr. Yu, who was a friend of Mr. Wang, bought the ice cream from the shop downstair. The ice cream was a favourite brand of Mr. Yu, and he usually bought a dozen and stored in fridge. He shared the ice cream with his friends during a drinking session on November 4, 2010.

Mr. Wang recalled the ice cream looked normal from outside. He felt not right when he almost finish the ice cream until he discovered the ‘condom’. He spit the condom into an ashtray and rushed to toilet and vomit. He had no appetite since eating the ‘condom’ and had phobia to ice cream ever since. He was really worried that the condom was used by someone else.

After the event, Mr. Yu called the number on the packaging to the manufacturer. A representative came on the 5th and brought a white rubber circle to Mr. Yu to see. The representative explained that it was not condom Mr. Wang ate, it was a sealing ring from the machine. It was made of silicone and non-toxic. The manufacturer gave Mr. Yu two boxes of ice cream and 2,000 Yuan as compensation.

The value of dysplastic Chinese cabbage was increased by several folds after its outer leaves were removed. The lousy cabbages were branded as “Alpine Baby Cabbage” from Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and sold at the major supermarkets and markets.

The fake baby cabbage incident was discovered by Mr. Dong who stayed at Chuiyangliu Middle St, Beijing, China. He bought a pack of Alpine Baby Cabbage from local market three days ago. When he reached home, he noticed that the baby cabbages he bought were different from what he usually bought.

It was written on the product description at the back of the packing, which stated that Alpine Baby Cabbage was produced in Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, Kunming, Qujing, Chuxiong, Yuxi Alpine Areas with high quality mountain spring water. However there was no statement of the product origin and company’s name or address, and it was sealed with transparent tape.

Mr. Dong was confirmed that the baby cabbage was counterfeit as he was consuming it for over ten years. He said that both the look and taste were different.

It was later discovered by the reporter disguised as college student that the baby cabbage was actually the heart of Chinese cabbage. The traders said that the baby cabbages which were sold in bulk were actually the leftover of those rotten Chinese cabbage. The vendors removed the rotten leaves of the Chinese cabbage and sold the heart as baby cabbages. The traders said the current wholesale price for 500 grams Chinese cabbage was only 20 cents, and one big Chinese cabbage was less than 70 cents. When the outer leaves were removed, the heart can be sold at 3 Yuan per 500 grams, and each Chinese cabbage’s heart can be sold at 1.5 Yuan. So the vendors were not worried if the Chinese cabbages were not sold out as they can be sold as baby cabbage by removing the outer leaves. This is an unspoken rule and many vendors were doing it. Some of the vendors even bought the packings of Alpine Baby Cabbage and processed the “Alpine Baby Cabbage” by themselves. Similar fake Alpine Baby Cabbage had been processed from the markets and flowed into the major supermarkets.

When the reporter went to complain to the market management, he was kicked out and was told that alpine baby cabbages were produced like that, and if he was not satisfied, he can just returned the goods at where he bought them. The reporter had already complaint to the Beijing industrial and commercial bureau.

Eating worms or insects may not be an unusual thing in some part of the world, but it is definitely weird and scary in the Chinese society. 49-year-old Cheng Ping Gui from Xipu, Xi County was putting a wiggling yellow mealworm into his mouth when reporter went to visit him. He has been eating at least 10 yellow mealworms daily for four years.

Every time Cheng invited his friends to have meal at home, he will prepare two yellow mealworm dishes. One is deep fried yellow mealworm, whereas the other is raw and living one. Although Cheng ate the living mealworm happily, his guests can only try the deep fried one by their limit.

Cheng first contact with the yellow mealworm was 12 years ago. It was his brother-in-law who bred the yellow mealworm, and each mealworm can be sold from 5 cent to 10 cents. Cheng changed his career path by seeing how profitability yellow mealworm business is even though his family and friends strongly disagreed with his decision. Four years ago, he went to Xin Dou county to sell yellow mealworm, and he saw a foreigner swallowed a living yellow mealworm into his stomach. He thought that he had bad health, so he imitated the foreigner eating the yellow mealworm raw. After that he was in love with the mealworm and his gastric hemorrhage was cured.

Hua Xi Insect Museum curator, Zhao Li, claimed that yellow mealworm has high level of protein and it is not toxic or poisonous. The yellow mealworm is widely used as feed, and it is edible. “As long as the yellow mealworm is clean, eating raw at small amount should not cause any harm,” Zhao said. However there is no study case or research show that yellow mealworm can cure gastric hemorrhage.

Two ladies were enjoying their meal at a restaurant, and suddenly one of them screamed. They stopped eating and took out their mobile phone to take the photo of the dish of garlic spinach. Then they asked the restaurant owner to have a look at the dish, pointing out that there was a big insect in the dish. After looking at the insect, the owner said that it was nothing serious. He claimed that the insect proved that the vegetable used was organic, and no pesticides were used. The ladies initially wanted to ask for a discount for their meal, but after listening to what the owner said, they were mad and left the restaurant without paying. The owner chased after them accusing them for dine-n-dash. The ladies insisted the owner to bring them to hospital for medical check-up to confirm that the insect did not affect their health. In the end the owner decided not to collect money from the ladies.

There is one mother, Huang, in Chengdu is selling her breast milk online. She claimed that she has extra breast milk, and she is willing to feed another child, in a condition that she charges 300 Yuan daily. The extra breast milk makes her feel uncomfortable, and she needs to get up every night to squeeze the milk out and throw them away. She wasted 2 kg of milk everyday. There is no legal restriction for selling breast milk. However buyer needs to be aware of the infectious diseases that can cause by breast milk, such as Hepatitis B, and also the purchased breast milk might not be suitable for another baby.
