Two-meter long iron chain was tied to the iron post at the roadside at one end, and the other end was tied to a boy’s ankle. “I scared I will lose him,” the boy’s father said. The father explained the boy’s mother suffered from mental disorder, and she was unable to take care of the boy. He needs to work to support the family. He lost his 4-year-old daughter before and this cause him to chain his son in order to protect the son.

The incident happened at the west wing of Beijing Fangshan Liangxiang shopping centre. Chen Chuan-Liu was working and there were a number of frostbite on his face. There was a cardboard on the floor two meters away from the pole sign, and on the cardboard was a stroller. The two-year-old boy was sitting on the cardboard drinking cold milk, and the pacifier was black in colour. A driver shouted “Golden Egg” to the kid and the boy smiled at him. Golden Egg’s right leg was chained with a two-meter long iron chain and tied to a pole sign. Chen Chuan-Liu went to work every 10 minutes, and no one was looking after the boy during this period. The boy’s mother, Yang Cai-Hong, was picking bottles on the other road and claimed that she was pregnant again.

A driver said that Chen Chuan-Liu tied his son here since three or four days ago, and Chen would bring the boy back home after work. Chen said his hometown was Sichuan, and he had no relative at Beijing. He needed to work to support the family and no extra time to take care of his son. Chen also cannot afford to send the boy to kindergarten, therefore he rather chained his son than losing the boy. Some people advised Chen to send his son to welfare organization to let others adopt the boy, but Chen could not bear to lose his son. Zhang Wen-Juan, Deputy Director of Beijing Youth Aid and Research Centre, said that there was a lack in relevant welfare system in current legislation for those children with parents as they are not considered as orphans.

On March 13 evening, a newborn baby was found trapped in the sewer of a public toilet. Merchants at Building Materials City, Beijing, Chaoyang District, jumped into the septic tank to rescue the baby. At present, the baby is fine but baby’s parents are not found and the police were looking for them.

Merchant Xiao Huang passed by a public toilet at 7pm the night before yesterday. He heard a faint crying sound coming from the female toilet, but he did not care as there were many children living there. However the crying was getting louder, so Xiao Huang and several other merchants who were living nearby tried to look for the crying source. Very quickly, they confirmed that the crying came from the sewer of the female toilet. A brave man tried to put his hand into the toilet bowl to reach for the crying source.

“It has hair, it was a baby!” The man exclaimed and this shocked everyone there. Suddenly the toilet tank was filled with water and a woman hurried to switch off the valve to prevent the baby choked to death.

The sewer hole was as big as a fist. The men used pliers and small clubs hoping to pull the child out but they failed. All the women there immediately stopped them from doing that as they were afraid that will hurt the baby. A merchant suggested to rescue the baby from the septic tank as the sewer was linked to the tank. All the merchants rushed out of the toilet straightaway.

22-year-old Xiao He removed the wooden planks that blocked the septic tank. Without saying any word, Xiao He took off his coat and pants, and threw two Asbestus nets into the septic tank before he jumped in. He said, “I think it is a losing battle anyway, and maybe I can pull out the kid with my long hand.” Xiao He did not success at first. Xiao Li later jumped into the tank as well trying to search the sewer with his hand until he was cut. Xiao Li did not succeed. Two merchants joined in subsequently, but the rescue had no progress. 20 minutes later, the baby’s crying became weaker and the women started to cry. Someone called 119 at this time.

“I think I caught the baby’s umbilical cord!” Xiao He shouted excitedly. Everyone held their breath at that moment. “It was only two minute, but it was like a really long time,” Xiao He told the reporter. Xiao He was scared from the moment he touched the baby. He scared that he would break the umbilical cord accidentally. When the baby was rescued, he sighed with relief.

The women took over the baby. The baby was a boy. The baby was then brought to the house of a merchant, Wu Yan-Hong, who lived near the public toilet. Wu Yan-Hong wiped the filth and blood on the baby’s body. She then wrapped her in her daughter’s swaddling clothes and carried her in front of the heater. The baby slowly regained the body colour. The baby was sent to Watson Hospital after the ambulance arrived.

After sending the baby away, the merchants started to discuss where the baby came from. Wu Yan-hong and her husband suddenly remembered they saw a stranger couple appeared at the public toilet around 6pm that day. Wu’s husband said there was a cry coming from the female toilet at 6pm. A young man who was wearing black clothes and helmet was sitting on a motorbike outside the toilet. The man apologized for his relative as he said she was giving birth when they came to use the toilet.

Wu said her husband wanted to call 120, but the man told Wu’s husband that he already called. Wu did not rest assured, so she wanted to ask two of her best friends to help. The man left the toilet at this time, and a short fat lady who looked like less than 20-year-old wearing yellow jacket came out from the toilet. She was carrying a lot of tissue papers with her. Wu asked her whether the woman who was giving birth was still inside the toilet, and the lady said yes. When Wu went into the toilet, she found no one. She rushed out from the toilet but both the man and the lady had disappeared.

The merchants were mad at what the couple did to the baby. They said the baby was a life, and even if they did not want to feed him, they should not flush him down into the toilet. The baby was transferred to Hepingli Hospital in accordance with the aid procedure. The Chaoyang police said that the case was under investigation.

The value of dysplastic Chinese cabbage was increased by several folds after its outer leaves were removed. The lousy cabbages were branded as “Alpine Baby Cabbage” from Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and sold at the major supermarkets and markets.

The fake baby cabbage incident was discovered by Mr. Dong who stayed at Chuiyangliu Middle St, Beijing, China. He bought a pack of Alpine Baby Cabbage from local market three days ago. When he reached home, he noticed that the baby cabbages he bought were different from what he usually bought.

It was written on the product description at the back of the packing, which stated that Alpine Baby Cabbage was produced in Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, Kunming, Qujing, Chuxiong, Yuxi Alpine Areas with high quality mountain spring water. However there was no statement of the product origin and company’s name or address, and it was sealed with transparent tape.

Mr. Dong was confirmed that the baby cabbage was counterfeit as he was consuming it for over ten years. He said that both the look and taste were different.

It was later discovered by the reporter disguised as college student that the baby cabbage was actually the heart of Chinese cabbage. The traders said that the baby cabbages which were sold in bulk were actually the leftover of those rotten Chinese cabbage. The vendors removed the rotten leaves of the Chinese cabbage and sold the heart as baby cabbages. The traders said the current wholesale price for 500 grams Chinese cabbage was only 20 cents, and one big Chinese cabbage was less than 70 cents. When the outer leaves were removed, the heart can be sold at 3 Yuan per 500 grams, and each Chinese cabbage’s heart can be sold at 1.5 Yuan. So the vendors were not worried if the Chinese cabbages were not sold out as they can be sold as baby cabbage by removing the outer leaves. This is an unspoken rule and many vendors were doing it. Some of the vendors even bought the packings of Alpine Baby Cabbage and processed the “Alpine Baby Cabbage” by themselves. Similar fake Alpine Baby Cabbage had been processed from the markets and flowed into the major supermarkets.

When the reporter went to complain to the market management, he was kicked out and was told that alpine baby cabbages were produced like that, and if he was not satisfied, he can just returned the goods at where he bought them. The reporter had already complaint to the Beijing industrial and commercial bureau.

Beijing had sent an initiative to all the hotels and restaurants in the city for suspension of dog meat dishes supply during Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

Dog meat is not only popular in Beijing’s Korean restaurant, but often a popular dish in Yunnan and Guizhou restaurant.

Beijing Food Safety Office issued a document in June requesting all contracted Olympic Hotels not to sell any dog meat related dishes during Olympic Games. If there is dog meat in the ingredient of traditional medicine, it should be stated clearly.

This is to avoid discontent of animal rights organizations and Western tourists. This action is to respect the customs of different countries.

The document proposed all restaurants stop supplying dog meat during Olympic Games but it never mention the issue of donkey meat.

In 1988 Seoul Olympics, many criticisms from the West made Korean stop eating their favourite dish, dog meat, for a period of time.
